Thank you Māhealani Uchiyama for inviting me to shoot your amazing collection of rare and antique mbira. These pics (and others) are featured in her new book “The Mbira, An African Musical Tradition” and represent the VERY FIRST publication of my photography. I’m proud to be included in this wonderful book and grateful for the opportunity to work with such amazing artists, creators and educators. It is a great read!
The Mbira Book is a resource for both students and aficionados alike of the mystical and entrancing music of Zimbabwe. It includes historical perspectives, tips for learning how to play the mbira, a photo essay featuring a variety of instruments of the region and a discussion of the spiritual underpinnings of the tradition as it relates to sub-Saharan African cosmology. The Mbira Book includes sections on mbira dance and a useful glossary of terms.
